DIY

Background: I know that most of the people that will read this either know me personally or have never met me. I expect that we are now friends over the interwebz or the magic land of Facebook.

I created this blog as a means of expression and therapy. they say the quietest people often have the loudest minds; that said, I'm not the quietest of people. I enjoy weekend with friends and an all around social person however, I rarely "express myself". This is my means of conveyance to the world. If there is one thing that I try hard at everyday, it's running. It's my addiction, my fix, my "need".

The point of this blog is not to gloat or talk about how awesome I am at running; simply put, I'm not. I'm not excessively talented, or "born with it". It's been a transformation over time from simply beginning. I'm sure I'll devote a whole post to the "journey" to where I am today. The basics are: I was fat, I lost a bunch of weight, I got my diet, and my priorities under control and made my health and diet my priority. It's no longer something I think about.

A few of you know, I'm a vegetarian. I also have a moderate Gluten Intolerance. This means I have a very strict diet which I think actually helps the cause. I am a member of a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), and I think farming especially local farming is important. I only eat eggs and cheese, and I have not broken my vegetarianism in 4 years. I haven't knowingly broken my Gluten Free diet in 1.5+ years. I am a passionate cook, and I'm sure I'll post some of my recipe and food up here for everyone.

I realize it's taken me 4 paragraphs to get to the point, bear with me, I'm new to this! The goal of this blog is to share it as an extension of my life, to put my running, my thoughts, my food, and my brain out for the world to see (or not). My goals are simple break 2 hours and 45 minutes in the marathon, and 1 hour 16 minutes in the half marathon. I will share pictures, Garmin profiles, music (which I really love!), and my thoughts. I will share how my runs felt and I'll also share my running schedule and what works for me.

I put this out here because I'm going through changes in my life, I'm recently single, I moved out after 1.5 years and I need a way to cope and as I said early, create an outlet, my "therapy" if you will.  I promise to keep things interesting (as much as I can).

As I said, I'm a music buff and a good portion of the Blog Titles will be songs, and I'll post about why I like the song or if it was just something that stuck with me. Today's title is Savoy- DIY. I'm not a huge dubstep fan ( Huge lie, I love this junk; poppy bassy stuff, but only the good stuff). This song is fantastic for a tempo work out, which was the basis of today's to runs. The title also is something I related with today as well.

Today's Workout:

I plan to make this a separate section. I'll post my Garmin files (when I run outside, it's 100+ out in Michigan (WTF!!)). Otherwise I'll post my treadmill workouts.

Today I warmed up outside with 4miles out and back on the lake. I raced the Firecracker 5 Miler, and I finished in 29:4x, which was good enough for 5th place. I was really hoping for 28:00 but considering a bulk of my training has been inside and it was high 80's and high humidity I can't complain. I know I'm good for sub 28:00 in good weather. I will have redemption soon!

4 Mile Shake Out

I doubled it up for the evening and my legs were feeling really good, I didn't have any tightness and when I hit the treadmill, I caught up with my buddy Ryan Geers; before I knew it I was clicking the minutes down and I was at 7:00 for the first mile and I knew things were going to go well when I pushed it to 9.6mph and I felt comfortable. I planned on 1 mile warmup 4 at  a fast comfortable pace and 1 mile cooldown. I finished the 6 miles in 39:22, which gave me a roughly 6:40 average. The middle miles were from 6:35-6:18 and I felt went incrementally faster each passing mile.

I promise they won't all be this long. just nervous energy.

  1. All the best blog entries are long, rambling affairs, Andrew. Well, all of my best entries are long and rambling. Actually, that's probably not true, either. It's your blog; write what you want. :-)

  2. love it! Can't wait to see some of the recipes. Being that this is the first blog I've read, I enjoy it. Can't wait to follow your journey. Perhaps I'll give it a try. Maybe I should blog about retirement or my art?
